What Experts Say
Tips for Making Genuine Online Friends
Be Authentic
Pretending to be someone you're not leads to shallow connections. Share your real interests, opinions, and personality. The right people will appreciate the real you.
Be Consistent
Friendships require maintenance. Check in regularly, remember details about their life, and be available when they need support. Use the long-distance friendship strategies that work.
Take Initiative
Don't wait for others to message first. Reach out, suggest activities, and show genuine interest in their lives.
Move Conversations Forward
After initial small talk, deepen the connection:
- Share something personal (but appropriate)
- Ask thoughtful questions about their experiences
- Find common ground to explore together
- Propose shared activities (watching a movie together, playing games)
Red Flags to Watch For
Not everyone online has good intentions. Be cautious if someone:
- Pressures you for personal information quickly
- Asks for money or favors early on
- Love-bombs (excessive flattery too fast)
- Refuses to share anything about themselves
- Gets angry when you set boundaries

Transitioning to Deeper Friendship
As trust builds, you might:
- Move from platform chat to messaging apps
- Share social media accounts
- Have voice or video calls
- Send each other memes, songs, or recommendations
- Eventually meet in person (safely, in public places)
Making Friends as an Adult — Why It's Harder and How to Fix It
If you're finding it difficult to make friends, you're not alone. Research shows that adults lose an average of two close friends per decade after age 25. Work schedules, family responsibilities, and geographic moves all contribute. Online platforms solve many of these barriers by providing accessible ways to meet people regardless of your location or schedule.
